Coyote Alert
On
June 29 at approximately 12:30 p.m. (just after noon), a coyote was
observed in a back yard in the 3200 block of S. Newton St. It was a
small coyote approximately 25 to 30 pounds, mostly reddish in color,
with darker and lighter speckling.
It
did not appear to be wary of the two adult humans who were
present.
On
July 11 at approximately midnight, a much larger and lighter in
color coyote was in the same back yard. It made no sound, but
grabbed a small 16-pound dog's head completely in its mouth and
tried to run off with it. Two larger dogs were in the back yard and
it did not seem at all afraid of them. It severely injured the small
dog before a human ran at it, yelling, waving arms, and forced it to
drop the small dog in order to escape. The small dog has several
serious puncture wounds and bites, a cracked jaw, severe swelling,
and is (obviously) in a great deal of pain. Although he is expected
to recover in time, it is still possible some of the nerve damage
will be permanent.
Since
then we have had reports from neighbors and people at the vet's
office, that 3 coyotes (2 of them match the descriptions of the ones
seen in the back yard) roaming from Loretto Heights to South Newton
st. Remember, they are more bold in packs and not so easily
intimidated.
Numerous
neighbors have reported pets have gone missing in the past few weeks
in the area from Loretto Heights west to Bear Valley.
If
you see a coyote, take action to make it feel unwanted. Throw rocks,
small sticks, spray it with a garden hose, yell at it, etc. Do not
approach it.
Now
that we've seen these particular animals are out and about at all
hours, day or night, seem to be traveling at times in packs, and do
not appear to be afraid of either humans or large dogs, who is to
say what they might do next: A child: An elderly or frail person:
Let us not hesitate to take appropriate action IMMEDIATELY.
If
you see a coyote, PLEASE call Ashley DeLaup,
Wildlife Ecologist for Denver Parks & Rec, at 303-455-0785 with
the date, time, location and any information you can give her about
the sighting.
PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.
